CAS Juniors, Sophomores & Freshmen:
Please run for important committees (School Site Council and the BSEP
committee) and student school board director at Berkeley High.
Although CAS is a small school within Berkeley High, BHS still has a lot of
control over CAS. BHS student government elections are coming up. Part of
this is electing student representatives to important committees in which
administrators, teachers, parents and students make major decisions about school
political issues and funding for BHS and CAS and the other small schools.
This is not the part of student government that plans proms and spirit week.
CAS is not just about creating a cool or interesting school for you. It is
about working to make a more just and fair education system for all. As part
of the social justice mission of CAS, we hope that you will consider
stepping up and helping take up the work of making Berkeley High work for all
students. CAS is one of the leading centers of the struggle for real equity and
achievement for all students. Your insights and perspectives are important
and should be heard on key governance committees.
These committees are the School Site Council, the BSEP committee and Shared
Governance. The student representatives have a vote equal to the vote of
the principal, department heads, small schools lead teachers and parents.
These committees decide such things as whether all schools and programs should be
diverse, or should be allowed to self-segregate, whether ethnic studies
should be taught to all students, what the attendance, discipline and tardy
policies should be, and how funds should be spent. For example, BSEP funds video
equipment but the amount was reduced this year.
The student government election also chooses the student who will be an
actual member of the School Board, which is a very influential position, and the
student senators, who advise the student school board member on policy
matters.
The application to run for these positions is available outside Room D148
and applications are due this Friday, April 7, in Room D148. Sometimes, very
few students sign up for these positions, so there is not even a contested
election, or the leadership class chooses the representatives. Let's have a
diverse group of CAS students running to have a voice in important decisions
that affect students, CAS and all of BHS.
Teachers and parents--encourage your students to run!
