Dear CAS freshmen & families,
We have finished reading Shakespeare's Tempest. This week we are doing a number of interesting and powerful things.
Perhaps most exciting, we will be going to see a film, a new release, that shows a production of The Tempest that is put on in a Kentucky prison. Shakespeare Behind Bars is being shown this week only at the Shattuck Cinema. We have made special arrangements for the film to be shown for the CAS freshmen at a special time, 9:30 AM on Wednesday, April 19. Students will be released from period 2 and 3 classes to attend this showing. NOTE: We need your help to make this successful. First, we ask every family to chip in and pay $7.00 for the tickets we had to purchase in bulk. I put it on my credit card so it should be a check made out to Rick Ayers or just the cash. If you can do more, like pay for two tickets, that would be very helpful as we will have some families who cannot pay. Money should be sent to school with your child on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Second, we could use some chaperones/helpers to come along with us for this showing. Please write Rick Ayers at rick-ayers at earthlink.net if you can do this.
Note that we will be reading the Aimee Cesaire version called A Tempest. This is an Afro-Caribbean, Afro-centric, colonial point of view reading of the whole story. It is smart, funny, and insightful.
We will be finishing the video production of our class versions of the play. This involves work with ICT which I'm sure will go into the following week so keep track of developments, you won't want to miss the video when we finally have it ready to show!
We will be working on a writing assignment in which students respond to certain themes in the play. More on this later.
Sincerely,
Rick Ayers & Anna Shneiderman
