CAS Parents of Juniors, Sophomores & Freshmen:
Please run for important committees--School Site Council, Shared Governance
and the BSEP committee at Berkeley High; an informational meeting and parent
elections are coming up.
CAS is about working to make a more just and fair education system for all.
As part of the social justice mission of CAS, we hope that you will consider
stepping up and helping take up the work of making Berkeley High work for
all students. CAS is one of the leading centers of the struggle for real equity
and achievement for all students. Your insights and perspectives are
important and should be heard on key governance committees. And, although CAS is a
small school within Berkeley High, BHS still has a lot of control over CAS.
On these school-wide committees, administrators, teachers, parents and
students make major decisions about school political issues and funding for BHS
and CAS and the other small schools. The parent representatives have a vote
equal to the vote of the principal, department heads, small schools lead teachers
and students. These committees decide such things as whether all schools
and programs should be diverse, or should be allowed to self-segregate,
whether ethnic studies should be taught to all students, what the attendance,
discipline and tardy policies should be, and how funds should be spent. For
example, BSEP funds video equipment but the amount was reduced this year.
Sometimes, very few parents sign up for these positions, so there is not even a
contested election.
The election will be at the PTSA meeting in May. This Wednesday, the PTSA
will hold an informational meeting to describe the committees. Here are the
details:
"WHAT? BHS Community Gathering
WHERE? BHS College and Career Center (2nd Floor, Administration Bldg)
WHEN? Wednesday, April 26 6:30-8:30 PM
6:30-7:00:
Gather. Snack. Chat.
7:00-8:30:
Share your wisdom and experience.
Contribute your ideas for making Berkeley High a more inclusive community.
Learn how to become a decision-maker at Berkeley High.
WHO? All members of the Berkeley High Community are welcome! "
Let's have a diverse group of CAS parents running to have a voice in
important decisions that affect students, CAS and all of BHS.
