Dear CAS Parents and Guardians:

CAS is successful because parents, students and teachers work together
in
a unique partnership focusing on students and their learning. We have a
long, fruitful history of close collaboration that has allowed CAS to
educate students in non-traditional ways, such as through international
travel, outdoor education and the use of communication technology. These
opportunities have existed for CAS students thanks to the active
participation by all constituent groups. I'm writing to inform you of a
vital organization within CAS and to invite you to an open informational
meeting.

The organization that guides CAS on programmatic issues is called the
Leadership Council. The LC is comprised of students, parents, teachers
and our counselor.

The work of the LC:

-Exchange ideas, questions, concerns and information between constituent
groups.

-Set goals for student achievement for the year.

-Do the "behind the scenes" work of CAS. Example: Last year, it was a
subcommittee of the LC that made the CAS trip to Oaxaca, Mexico happen.

-LC parents act as a link to the Parent Coordinating Committee (PCC) and
by extension, to the parent community as a whole.

Commitment:

-One LC meeting per month (Held on a Thursday evening from 5:00-7:00)

-Typically, one subcommittee meeting per month

-Some independent at-home work (Example: database management, phone
calls to businesses, etc.)

-One Parent Coordinating Committee meeting per month (Usually the first
Monday of the month from 7:00-9:00pm)

If you would consider serving on the LC, please come to our first
meeting

of the year on Thursday, September 18 from 5:00-7:00. The meeting will
likely take place at the Greenlining Institute. (See address below.)
I'll send out confirmation shortly. You can watch and participate in the
meeting and at the end parents will select four people to be on the LC.

I hope to see you on the 18th!

Sincerely,

Phil Halpern
CAS Lead Teacher
