A letter from Beatriz

Dear Friend,

My name is Beatriz Leyva-Cutler, and I am running for Berkeley School Board Director. My professional career and community efforts have been dedicated to supporting children, youth, and families for over 30 years. I am the Executive Director of BAHIA, a bilingual nonprofit child development program in West Berkeley serving children ages 2 to 10 years old. Of my 28 years with the organization, 20 have been as the Executive Director, and I am proud to have served over 1100 children and families during my tenure. My bilingual and bicultural skills have particularly helped me to create a greater understanding between people and to help build caring communities. I have been recognized by the California State Assembly, the City of Berkeley and the San Francisco Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as a strong and effective community leader.

With your support I can take my experience, knowledge and dedication as an early childhood educator, parent, grandparent, and community activist into the Berkeley community at large by serving on the School Board.

I believe that Berkeley Schools are good, and can be significantly better with the right leadership. As School Board Director, I will work to:

·         Increase student achievement in line with the 2020 Vision established by United in Action and affirmed by BUSD and the City of Berkeley; that will develop a city-wide plan to address the achievement gap;
·         Monitor academic progress and employee accountability;
·         Increase communications between all partners;
· Support our educators while simultaneously recruiting additional qualified and diverse teachers
· Provide teachers and classified personnel with professional development opportunities that address our district-wide priorities; and,
· Increase and welcome parent engagement and involvement on all school sites

Your vote and support to my campaign for School Board is extremely valuable and demonstrates that our community recognizes it is time for change, and time to work together to address concerns as a community. Please consider making a contribution to support my election to the Berkeley School Board. Thank you! ¡Gracias!

Sincerely,

Beatriz Leyva-Cutler
